Hector Garcia Finishes Sixth at Big West Championships

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -
Sophomore Hector Garcia earned all-conference honors in leading the UC Irvine men's cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the Big West Championships Saturday morning at the UCR Ag/Ops Course.
 
Garcia covered the 8000-meter course in 24:43.7 to come in sixth out of 68 competitors. The top-10 showing earned him his first career All-Big West nod, while it is the third-straight year the 'Eaters have had an all-conference performer. Garcia has placed among the top-10 and been the Anteaters' No. 1 runner in four of five meets this season.
 
Senior Izzak Mireles crossed the finish line next for UCI as he took 23rd with a time of 25:13.7. Junior Ashton Garcia followed in 29th (25:30.2), while freshman Ravi Sharma was 37th (25:47.4).
 
Junior Jon Rodriguez was the team's fifth and final scorer at 26:50.1 (59th).
 
Rounding out the Anteater competitors were sophomore Sam Ayala (60th, 26:59.0), freshman Kit Carter (64th, 27:32.2) and junior Andrew Graciano (67th, 28:13.4).
 
Cal Poly successfully defended its team title with 29 points. UC Santa Barbara (55) was the runner-up and Cal State Fullerton (112) finished third. UC Davis' Thomas Madden was the individual champion at 24:13.7.
 
UC Irvine now has a couple weeks to prepare for the NCAA West Regional in Seattle, Wash., on Friday, Nov. 10.
