Men's Golf Travels to Central Valley for Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team is back in action this week as it travels to the Central Valley for the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational, Thursday through Saturday (Oct. 26-28).
 
The 54-hole tournament will take place at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton. One round will be contested each day with tee times on Holes 1 and 10 starting at 8 a.m.
 
UCI is part of a 19-team field that also features Boise State, BYU, CSUN, Denver, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Long Beach State, Nevada, Oregon State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Seattle, South Dakota, Temple, UC Riverside and host Pacific.

THE LINEUP
UC Irvine's lineup for the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational is comprised of David Kim, Jonathan Young, Ryan O'Connor, Jonathan Kang and Ramiz Jamal. The same Anteater contingent competed in the season-opening Nick Watney Invitational.
 
THE COURSE
The Reserve at Spanos Park is a renowned links-style golf course designed by Andy Raugust. With Mt. Diablo as a backdrop, it showcases the splendor of incredible sunrises and sunsets. The par-72 golf course will play at 7,082 yards for this week's tournament.

LAST TIME OUT
Senior David Kim led UC Irvine at the 22nd annual Bill Cullum Invitational as he recorded his best round of the tournament on the final day to claim runner-up honors. Kim, who started the third round in fifth place, carded a 68 (-4) to move up in the standings and finish with a 54-hole total of 7-under 209. Senior Jonathan Young also tied for 21st (217), while freshman Ray Yang (230) and sophomore Jonathan Kang (231) were 70th and 71st, respectively.
 
As a team, the 'Eaters placed eighth overall. Utah State won the title at 848 (-16), and Cal State Fullerton's Derek Castillo was individual medalist, tying the tournament record at 14-under 202.
 
NEWS AND NOTES
Through two tournaments, senior David Kim leads the 'Eaters with a 72 average. He has shot a 70 or better in three of the six rounds he has played.
 
Kim recorded a season-best 67 (-4) through the first 18 holes of the Nick Watney Invitational. That stood as the second-best round of the tournament.
 
Kim also earned his 13th career top-10 finish with his second-place performance at the Bill Cullum Invitational. He shot a 54-hole total of 7-under 209 (71-70-68).
 
Senior Ryan O'Connor and Kim were the Anteaters' top performers at the Nick Watney Invitational as they both recorded a 223 to tie for 30th. O'Connor carded a 2-over-73 in the third round to jump 14 spots in the standings on the final day.
 
Senior Jonathan Young notched back-to-back rounds of 2-under 70 to tie for 21st at the Bill Cullum Invitational. Freshman Ray Yang, who was playing in his first collegiate tournament last week, also finished 70th with a score of 230 (76-74-80), while junior Ramiz Jamal added his best round of the young season, posting a 73 (+1) over the final 18 holes.
 
Head coach Paul Smolinski is in his 20th year at the helm of the UCI men's golf program and the long-time coach has a veteran squad this year with eight returners, including four seniors.
 
David Kim is coming off an impressive 2016-17 campaign where he earned an NCAA Regional berth and was named the Big West Player of the Year. He was tops on the team with a 71.28 average, and placed among the top-10 in eight tournaments.
 
Ryan O'Connor (74.03), Jonathan Young (74.23), and sophomore Jonathan Kang (74.23) each added a top-10 finish last year.
 
UP NEXT
UC Irvine will have a week off from competition before it closes out the fall season at the Saint Mary's Invitational, Nov. 6-8, at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.
