UC Irvine Uses 4-Goal Burst to Defeat LMU, 9-7

 

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- UC Irvine scored the first four goals of the final quarter and held off host Loyola Marymount, 9-7, at Burns Aquatics Center Saturday morning.

The game was tied 5-5 after three quarters before UCI's Christian Macias put the eighth-ranked 'Eaters ahead for good at 6-5 on a goal with 6:32 left in the fourth period.

Jack Trush scored the last of his three goals with 5:59 remaining for a 7-5 lead, Ian Fleenor converted a penalty shot with 4:52 left to push the margin to 8-5 and Bryant Joudrie made it a four-goal lead on a power-play score at the 4:05 mark.

The Lions notched a pair of late goals to close out the scoring.

UCI (5-2) led 2-1 after one quarter and the 'Eaters were up 3-2 at halftime.

In addition to Trush's three goals, Joudrie scored twice and junior goalie Matej Matijevic continued his stellar play with 15 saves.

Eric Reitmeir led LMU (2-5) with four goals.

UCI hosts California Baptist Wednesday night at 7:00 in a non-conference game at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
