BOISE, Idaho --- UC Irvine spoiled Boise State's own Bronco Invitational with a goal in the 96th minute to snag the 1-0 win Sunday afternoon and give it four straight wins to open the season.
The Anteaters (4-0) played a pretty even match through regulation. UCI held the shot advantage 5-3 through one half, but the Broncos (1-2) fired the only attempt on frame.
UCI came back with six more second half shots with four on target, all saved by junior keeper Janelle Flores. Despite the advantage across the board for the 'Eaters, the match remained scoreless heading to extra time.
An early chance for Andrea Mensen sailed just over the crossbar early in overtime, but the 'Eaters would capitalize on the next chance.
Kelsey Texeira found Kiana Palacios on a breakaway down the right flank, and Palacios slipped a shot around Flores and inside the far post for the match's lone score in the 96th minute to earn the 1-0 victory.
For Palacios, it was goal number four of the season on Texeira's first career assist. The tandem have accounted for all four game-winners thus far with two each.
Freshman Maddie Newsom did her job in net as well stopped the two shots that came her way, and also came home with Defensive MVP for the tournament.
Texeira added Attacking MVP to her goal and assist for the weekend.
UCI's 4-0 start is the fourth of its kind in program history. The 1986 Anteaters also won their first four matches, and the 1998 and 2011 Anteaters also began 4-0 and each stretched their season-opening streaks to five wins.
This squad will search for its fifth consecutive win on Thursday, Sept. 1 as they hit the University of Nevada in Reno at 1:00 p.m. before coming back home on Sunday, Sept. 4.
