RENO, Nev. --- UC Irvine's hot start to the season was derailed on a 98th-minute penalty kick by Nevada Thursday afternoon to deal the 'Eaters their first loss of 2016.
On the 27th foul of the match, Nevada (1-2) would earn a try from the penalty spot, and in the 98th minute, Angel Meriwether would convert for the match's only score and give the Wolfpack the 1-0 win.
The Anteaters (4-1) entered overtime with a 9-5 shot advantage after the squads each put up three in the first half. The overtime period also began with a bit of animosity after five yellow cards were distributed in a 21-second period near the end of regulation.
Freshman Maddie Newsom stopped the only other shot directed at her in the match, but the loss was the first of her young career.
The 'Eaters directed three shots on frame at Wolfpack keeper Kelsey Quintos, and three 'Eaters had multiple shots on the afternoon.
The match was UCI's third straight to go into extra time. In coach Juniper's 10 years with the program, the squad has played three straight overtime matches just once when they finished the 2012 campaign with five consecutive overtime contests. It's also the first overtime loss since 2014 spanning nine matches for the program.
The loss snaps the four-match win streak UCI began the season with, and its next chance to start a new streak will come Sunday, September 4 at 4:30 p.m. in Anteater Stadium as it welcomes in Pittsburgh.
