IRVINE, Calif. -- Head coach Julie Brooks heads into the 2016-17 season with a group of veterans and schedule full of familiar tournaments.
"Our players should be familiar with the courses we are going to play," head coach Julie Brooks said. "A strong group of upperclassmen should help us attain our goals with their experience and drive."
The very competitive Big West Championships will be held Apr. 23-25 at the Oak Quarry Gold Course. UCI will get a preview of the conference tournament when they compete at the Battle at the Rock in February also at the Oak Quarry course.
After taking a year off to hone her skills, junior Kaley In returns to the team after redshirting in 2015-16. In is a two-time All-Big West honoree who led the team with a 76.26 average over 23 rounds as a sophomore. In qualified for the U.S. Amateur this summer.
"Kaley brings leadership, consistency and experience," head coach Julie Brooks said. "She is everything you want your upperclassmen to be."
Without In, Samantha Chan led the squad last year. The senior led the team in three tournaments and topped the squad with a 78.04 scoring average.
An infusion of talented newcomers, Avery French and Grace Ferrell, will add depth to the team.
French joins the Anteaters after transferring from UNLV. French, who redshirted last season, owned a 76.63 scoring average in 2015 and was a member of the Rebel team that qualified for the NCAA championships. She ranked third on the team and 25th in the Mountain West with a scoring average of 77.32 as a freshman.
Ferrell is a local standout from Newport Harbor High School where she is a three-time Sunset League MVP. Last October, she also captured the Sunset League individual title.
