LONG BEACH, Calif. --- UC Irvine senior Melanie Speech and sophomore Elizabeth Cotociu completed the first day of the heptathlon at the Big West Conference Multi Championships Friday in Long Beach.
Speech is in ninth place with 2,627 points and Cotociu is 13th with 2,502 in the competition at Long Beach State's Jack Rose Track.
Speech had the field's top effort in the shot put at 42-5 ½ and had other marks of 17.03 in the 100-meter hurdles, 4-9 in the high jump and 26.61 in the 200 meters.
Cotociu registered marks of 15.56 in the 100 hurdles, 4-7 ¾ in the high jump, 29-7 ½ in the shot put and 26.75 in the 200 meters.
Riley Cooks of Long Beach State leads the heptathlon with 3,435 points.
Action resumes Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with the long jump, followed by the javelin throw and the final event, the 800 meters.
