IRVINE, Calif. --- The UC Irvine men's track and field program will have four representatives competing Thursday through Saturday in the NCAA West Preliminary Round at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan.
Junior Lloyd Sicard is making his third consecutive trip to the NCAA postseason and senior Cameron Vaca his second, and they will be joined in Lawrence by juniors Brandon Howard and Matt Seawright.
Sicard, the 2016 Big West Conference Men's Track co-Athlete of the Year, competes in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles Friday at 3:30 p.m. (PT) with the top 24 advancing to the quarterfinal round Saturday at 5:20 p.m. He won his second straight conference title in the 110-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 13.64 seconds May 14 and holds the UCI record of 13.60 that he set last year.
Vaca and Howard compete in the first round of the 400-meter hurdles Thursday at 3:00 p.m. (PT) with the quarterfinals on Friday at 5:45 p.m.
Vaca has a season-best time of 52.14 seconds and he ranks fifth in Anteater history with a time of 51.71 that he recorded last season. Howard has a top time of 52.22 (ninth all-time at UCI) that he registered in finishing second at the Big West Championships May 14. Vaca placed fifth in the race at the conference meet.
Seawright has qualified for the West Preliminary Round in the discus and hammer throw. Competition in the hammer throw begins Thursday at 10:00 a.m. (PT) and the discus is on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
He ranks third in the UCI record book in the hammer throw with a mark of 203-2 and fourth in the discus (183-4). Seawright accounted for 14 of UCI's team points at the 2016 Big West Championships.
The top 12 finishers in each event from the West Preliminary Round at Lawrence will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 8-11.
The East Preliminary Round is being held Thursday through Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla.
