Los Angeles, Calif.-- No. 6 UC Irvine (17-9) earned the victory over No. 19 Loyola Marymount (9-17), 8-6.
The Anteaters were able to keep the Lions at bay holding them scoreless through the first half. LMU came out strong in the second half scoring three in the third period and three in the final quarter, but the 'Eaters' offense continued to press and the defense did not give up earning UCI the win.
The first quarter started with back-and-forth shots by both teams that came up empty until Emily Carlson scored for the Anteaters with 2:56 left on the clock.
Steals by Mary Brooks, Natalie Seidemann and Julie Swieca kept the Lions off the board and an assist from Kelli Baumgardner over to Destene Albers gave the 'Eaters their second goal with nineteen seconds left in the first period.
Annika Nelson recorded three saves in the second quarter, those along with steals by Corinna Toledo and Brooks kept Loyola Marymount scoreless. Brooks scored off an assist by Carlson and then followed it up with another goal one minute later. Gabby Pierandozzi shot one in the net with ten seconds left in the first half to put UC Irvine on top 5-0.
LMU came out in the second half and quickly scored twice including once in the first minute and then capitalized on a power play at 6:05 in the third period.
The Anteaters answered back with a pass from Brooks to Albers who scored to give UCI the 6-2 lead.
Nelson recorded a save on a power play and then came up with a steal to hold the Lions off. The 'Eaters added to their lead when Brooks scored on a five-meter penalty shot. LMU would not end the period quietly, converting on an exclusion ending the third quarter 7-3.
Loyola Marymount scored another three goals in the final period including a five-meter penalty shot and a shot in the net with seven seconds left in the game. Despite the Lion's offensive effort, UC Irvine ensured their lead when Pierandozzi scored on a power play and a Nelson recorded a late save.
No. 6 UC Irvine travels up to No. 9 UC Davis for a game on Saturday (April 16) at 12:00 p.m.
