No. 6 UC Irvine Defeats No. 25 CSUN, 12-6

Irvine, Calif. – No. 6 UC Irvine defeated No. 25 CSUN in a Big West conference match-up, 12-6. The Anteaters came from behind in the first period to take and hold the lead for the remainder of the game. An offensive team-effort and timely defensive moves, including three steals by Mary Brooks and two from Hanna Lancaster, helped UCI move past the Matadors.
CSUN came out strong early in the first period as Madeleine Sanchez scored twice for the Matadors in the first three minutes of the game. UCI answered back with a pass from Allie Loomis to Julie Swieca to get the 'Eaters on the board. The Anteaters then tied it up as Keana Eldridge was able to convert a penalty. UC Irvine took the lead in the first quarter when Swieca scored after a steal by Eldridge.
Scoring didn't start until the second half of the second period when Lancaster scored a goal for the Anteaters. Destene Albers converted on an exclusion to increase the 'Eaters lead to 5-2. Sanchez came up with a hat trick when she scored for CSUN closing the gap 5-3. UCI totaled three goals for the second period as Albers shot one in the net on an assist from Swieca to close out the half, 6-3.
Lancaster was the first to score in the third period with a pass from Gabby Pierandozzi and CSUN answered back with a goal of their own a minute later as the Anteaters maintained a three-point lead, 7-4. Thirty-seconds later, Jolene Viramontes increased UCI's lead with a goal. The final minute of the period would not end quietly, as Pierandozzi scored on an assist by Albers with :36 seconds on the clock and the Matadors got a completed shot off with five seconds left as the third quarter ended with the Anteaters up 9-5.
CSUN scored first in the final period as Sanchez scored her fourth goal of the game, but that would be the Matador's final goal. The 'Eaters scored three more times with goals by Eldridge, Natalie Seidemann and Emily Carlson to end the match 12-6.
UC Irvine will take on No. 14 UC Santa Barbara Sunday (April 3) at the Anteater Aquatics Complex at 12:00 p.m.
