UC Irvine Finishes On The Road With A Win Over Pacific, 8-5

Stockton, Calif. -- No. 5 UC Irvine bounced back from an early deficit to defeat No. 17 University of Pacific, 8-5.
Pacific was the first to strike scoring twice in the first quarter. The Anteaters answered back as Destene Albers passed to Mary Brooks who skipped it in on the wing to put UCI on the board with 2:04 left in the first period.
The 'Eaters came out strong in the second quarter winning the sprint and scoring early as Albers put one in the net under the keepers' arms on an assist from Brooks to tie it up 2-2.
Steals by Gabby Pierandozzi and Brooks along with five saves by goalkeeper Annika Nelson helped keep Pacific from scoring in the second quarter.
The Anteaters offense continued to press as Brooks drew the exclusion and capitalized on the power play to put UCI on top.
Albers scored again with Brooks assisting to give UC Irvine a 4-2 lead. Jolene Viramontes passed to Hanna Lancaster who placed it in the top left corner to secure a three point lead with :58 left in the first half.
Nelson recorded four saves in the third quarter including one after an offensive turnover. Pacific got two off into the net before the end of the third narrowing the gap 5-4.
To start the final period, Julie Swieca drew the exclusion and assisted on the power play as Carlson converted it into UCI's sixth goal in the first minute.
The Tigers answered back with a shot by Rachel Krieger, but that would be Pacific's final goal.
Late game action included a long pass from Brooks to Albers who beat Pacific down the pool for a goal with 1:34 left on the clock giving Albers a hat-trick. Defensively, Nelson recorded her 13th save of the game and Brooks had a steal to prevent Pacific from scoring and giving UC Irvine the 8-5 win.
No. 5 UC Irvine will take on No. 16 Long Beach State in the final home match on Thursday (April 21) at 7:00 p.m. at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
