Irvine, Calif. – UC Irvine (5-14, 3-4) defeated CSUN (8-12, 2-5) in Big West action, 5-2. UC Irvine lost the doubles point, to come back in singles and win in straight sets at four flights.
The doubles point was highly fought for with strong play at all three flights. No. 1 Sarah Gong and Mazy Watrous were defeated 5-7 by Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei. No. 3 Andrea Duva and Stephanie Hazell fought back from a 1-4 deficit but eventually fell 4-6 as CSUN earned the doubles point. Vivien Dvali and Taylor LeFridge were up 5- 1 in a set tie-breaker at flight two when the Matadors earned the doubles point leaving the No. 2 match unfinished.
Duva took the first point for the Anteaters with a 6-3, 6-2 win at flight five over Kiryang Kim. UC Irvine continued as No. 4 Dvali earned the 6-2, 7-5 victory and a four-match streak. Gong also earned a win in straight sets defeating Mickey Hsu 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot.
The Matadors won their second point as Kristen Poei took the first set in a tie-breaker followed up with a win in the second over Watrous 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
LeFridge clinched it for the Anteaters when she fought back in her second set to take flight four and earn the fourth point 6-2, 7-5.
The match finished with Cassidy Branstine winning a seven-point match tie-breaker at the No. 6 spot cleaning it up for UC Irvine, 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 1-1, 7-3.
UC Irvine will play in their last home match of the season against UC Riverside on Wednesday (April 20) at 1:30 p.m.
