Elizabeth Cotociu is in 12th place after the first day of the heptathlon at the UC Riverside Spring Classic.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- UC Irvine's Melanie Speech and Elizabeth Cotociu completed the first day of the heptathlon at the UC Riverside Spring Classic Thursday.
Speech, a senior, scored 2,485 points in the first four events and is in 10th place.
She finished first in the shot put with a mark of 41-3, eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.50, and 17th in the 100-meter hurdles (17.31) and in the high jump (4-5 ½).
Cotociu, a junior, is in 12th place with 2,455 points.
She was ninth in the 200 meters (26.73), 11th in the 100-meter hurdles (16.28), 13th in the high jump (4-9) and 14th in the shot put (30-0 ¾).
Riley Cooks of Long Beach State leads the competition with 3,422 points.
The second and final day of the heptathlon is Friday with competition in the long jump, javelin and 800 meters. The first event begins at 12:00 p.m.
