It's an all UC San Diego week as No. 14 UC Irvine hosts UC San Diego Friday (Mar. 4) at 7:00 p.m. at the Bren Center then travels to UC San Diego Saturday (Mar. 5) for a 7:00 p.m. match at the RIMAC Arena.
You might want to come see the Anteaters this Friday because they will play the next 10 matches away from Irvine.
Following the match in La Jolla, UCI will play in the Asics Tournament hosted by Long Beach State Mar. 11-12 at the Pyramid. The Anteaters will take on Ohio State on Friday and Lewis on Saturday. Both matches begin at 5:00 p.m.
UCI does not return to the Bren until the final two regular season matches Apr. 7 & 9.
This will be the first meeting of the year for the two schools as UCI holds a 40-7 series lead over the Tritons, winning the last nine outings.
UCSD is 4-14 overall and 0-13 in the MPSF.
The Anteaters enter the week 4-12 overall and 3-11 in the MPSF.
Last week, UCI lost to No. 3 Stanford, 3-0 and No. 10 Pepperdine, 3-2.
Opposite Kyle Russell posted a career-high 24 kills and seven block assists against the Waves. Middle blockers Jason Agopian and Marty Ross were also key contributors as Agopian totaled 10 kills and seven total blocks and Ross had a career and match-high eight block assists to go with six kills on 11 attempts and no errors.
Against Stanford, Ross and Russell paced UCI with nine kills each. It was a career-best in kills for Ross who also led the squad with five total blocks.
Russell is seventh among MPSF players in points (4.02), sixth in aces (0.41) and eighth in kills (3.32). In MPSF matches only, the senior is fourth in points (4.14) and seventh in kills (3.42) and aces (0.40).
Ross ranks 12th in hitting percentage (.409) and fifth in blocks (1.32).
Libero Dillon Hoffman is sixth in the league with a 1.97 dig average.
UCI has been splitting time at setter with Dante Chakravorti averaging 8.80 set assists per game and Michael Saeta averaging 5.71. Saeta is also averaging 0.44 aces per game.
