Farías, Mexico Nearly Topple U.S., Eliminated from Olympic Contention

FRISCO, Tex. --- Janelly Farías and the Mexican national team fell short of its goal to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro following a 2-1 loss to Costa Rica in the group stage match Monday afternoon.

Mexico rallied late from a 2-0 deficit to score in the 79th minute, and a prime chance fell long in the closing minutes that would have tied the match, but in the end, the result stood 2-1 to Costa Rica leaving Mexico out of the knockout round stage in gut-wrenching fashion.

Farías and Mexico put up a solid 6-0 win over Puerto Rico to begin the tournament, and then gave the World Cup champion U.S. squad a fight led by great defending from Farías and the backline conceding just an 80th-minute goal off a rebound from a penalty kick.
