LA JOLLA, Calif. --- No. 9 UC Irvine brought out the defense in the finale of the UCSD Triton Invite Sunday afternoon cutting down the host Tritons, 5-3.
No. 19 UCSD (6-4) made and early run through the first quarter finishing with a 2-1 lead.
Destene Albers tied the match up 3:35 into the second quarter at 2-2. The 'Eaters took the lead with 1:13 left in the half thanks to Allie Loomis, one of her two first half goals, the first two of her career.
UC Irvine (6-4) continued its steady roll with two more goals in the second to stretch the lead to 5-2 and extended its scoreless stand over the Tritons to 17 minutes without allowing a goal.
UCSD broke that drought 30 seconds into the final period, but the goals would dry up down the stretch as the Anteaters would complete the 5-3 victory.
Jenna Phreaner completed the weekend with an 11-save performance after three five-save matches leading up to it.
The win leaves UCI as fifth place in the tournament, and will come home for its first match in Anteater Aquatics Complex against No. 1 UCLA on Fri. Feb. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
