RENO, Nevada --- Freshman guard Eyassu Worku scored a career-high 19 points and freshman forward Tommy Rutherford grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds, but UC Irvine fell at Nevada, 76-69, in a non-conference game at Reno Wednesday night.
Worku was 7 of 13 from the field, including 3 of 5 on threes, for the Anteaters (5-7).
Senior center Ioannis Dimakopoulos added 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting while senior guard Jaron Martin scored 10 points and tied his career high with six assists.
Sophomore forward Brandon Smith recorded eight points, five rebounds and tied his career high with three assists, and sophomore forward Jonathan Galloway registered eight rebounds.
Cameron Oliver led Nevada (9-2) with 18 points and Marcus Marshall added 17 as five Wolf Pack players scored in double figures.
The 'Eaters had to withstand a Nevada three-point barrage in the opening 20 minutes, as the Wolf Pack hit 10 of 17 threes in the first half to take a 42-36 halftime lead.
Oliver hit all four of his three-point attempts in the first half en route to 15 points and Marshall also hit four triples in the first frame, scoring 12 points.
Dimakopoulos scored 10 of his points in the first half for the 'Eaters and Worku nine.
UCI pulled to within three at 43-40 on a basket by Dimakopoulos with 16:50 left in the game before the Wolf Pack built the lead back to double digits midway through the second half.
The Anteaters didn't go away as Worku sparked a late rally, scoring 10 of his points in the final 4:38.
His jumper from the right side with 39 seconds remaining closed the deficit to 73-69, but Nevada hit 3 of 6 free throws and UCI missed four shots in the waning moments.
The Wolf Pack hit 13 of 25 three-point shots while UCI was just 5 of 23 from beyond the arc. The Anteaters shot 42 percent from the field in the game and Nevada 39.7 percent.
UCI won the battle of the boards, 48-40, but the Anteaters were 6 of 10 from the free-throw line to the Wolf Pack's 13 of 25.
"Nevada had it rolling from three in the first half, but we showed resilience and commitment when we were behind, and that shows good progress for this group," UCI head coach Russell Turner said.
"I did like the aggressiveness that I saw from our team tonight and am proud of my guys."
UCI continues its string of five consecutive road games Monday night at New Mexico State.
