'EATERS FACE BRONCOS: UC Irvine (3-4) plays its fourth consecutive game away from home Wednesday night when the Anteaters face Santa Clara (3-4) at the Leavey Center.
UCI went 1-2 at the Sanford Pentagon Showcase in Sioux Falls, S.D., this past weekend, defeating South Dakota State, 63-52, and falling to Milwaukee, 54-37, and East Tennessee State, 72-66.
MARTIN NAMED TO ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: UCI senior guard Jaron Martin was named to the all-tournament team in Sioux Falls after averaging 14.0 points, 3.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds in the three games. He scored 17 points in the win over South Dakota State and had 19 in the loss to ETSU. Martin tied his career high with eight rebounds against South Dakota State.
CAREER HIGHS FOR IOANNIS: 7-2 senior center Ioannis Dimakopoulos registered career highs of 21 points and nine rebounds in Sunday's loss to ETSU. He was 7 of 14 from the field, including 3 of 5 from three-point range.
MORE CAREER BESTS: Freshman guard Eyassu Worku had career highs of 15 points and seven rebounds in last Friday's win over South Dakota State, and he registered a career-best four assists versus East Tennessee State Sunday.
Freshman forward Tommy Rutherford snared a career-high eight rebounds against Milwaukee Saturday and he had three blocked shots in the victory over South Dakota State last Friday.
Freshman guard Evan Leonard grabbed a career-high five boards versus Milwaukee Saturday.
UCI-SANTA CLARA SERIES: Wednesday marks just the fourth meeting in the UCI-Santa Clara series. The Anteaters have won the previous three matchups, including 79-61 in Irvine last season (11/23/15).
Luke Nelson led UCI with 20 points while Jared Brownridge scored 19 for the Broncos.
WILDCATS NEXT: Following Wednesday night's game, Coach Russell Turner's Anteaters travel to Tucson to face No. 15/16 Arizona next Tuesday evening (7:00 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Networks).
Coach Herb Sendek's Santa Clara team fell to the Wildcats, 69-61, in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational last Thursday.
MARTIN LEADS IN SCORING: Senior guard Jaron Martin leads UCI with averages of 14.9 points and 3.6 assists per game.
Martin has hit 13 threes this season and ranks 15th in Anteater history with 115 career treys.
Senior center Ioannis Dimakopoulos is averaging 10.9 points while sophomore forward Jonathan Galloway leads the team in rebounding at 7.1 boards per game and also in total blocks (13).
UC IRVINE NOTES
● The Anteaters have won 59 of their last 64 games when holding the opposition to under 40 percent from the field.
● UCI leads the Big West Conference in field-goal percentage defense at .358, which ranks ninth in the nation entering the week.
● The Anteaters also lead the Big West in three-point field goal defense (.285), rebounding margin (+3.6) and blocked shots per game (4.7).
● Entering the week, UCI is 29h nationally in total blocks (33) and 38th in three-point field goal defense (.285).
● Jonathan Galloway ranks 38th in the nation in total blocks with 13.
● UCI has won 60 of its last 63 games when holding the opposition to 60 points or less, including 10-0 last season.
ON THIS DATE: Fourteen years ago (Nov. 30, 2002), UCI defeated Pepperdine, 74-69, at Malibu as Mike Hood scored 17 points. The Anteaters shot 50 percent from the field in the win.
