Freshmen Are Impressive In 3-0 Win Over UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Freshmen Loryn Carter and Makayla Wolfe were impressive in UC Irvine's 3-0 sweep of UC Santa Barbara at The Thunderdome Wednesday.

In the Big West finale, Carter led UCI with 11 kills, hitting .476 (11-1-21), while Wolfe hit .600 (6-0-10) with a team-high three blocks and an ace.

Victoria Dennis added 10 kills followed by Harlee Kekauoha with seven kills and 10 digs. Haley DeSales and Danielle Geiger each recorded five kills. Shelley Anderson had three kills, 37 set assists and eight digs. Libero Arden Davis tied Kekauoha with a team-high 10 digs.

The Anteaters had 47 kills to UCSB's 38 and out-hit the Gauchos .318-.268. The Anteaters go to 12-18 overall and 7-9 in the Big West, while UC Santa Barbara ends its season 17-12 overall and 8-8 in the Big West.

Elizabeth Sheffield led the Gauchos with 10 kills, while Lindsey Ruddins had nine and Chloe Allen posted eight kills. Emilia Petrachi recorded a match-high 13 digs.

UCI used a pair of kills by Danielle Geiger and a Gaucho attack error to take a 16-13 lead. UCSB closed to 21-19 before Loryn Carter pounded back-to-back kills and Makayla Wolfe fired an ace, 24-19. Following a UCSB kill, a Gaucho service error gave UCI the first set 25-20.

The Anteaters went on an 8-1 run on the strength of two kills each by Wolfe and Carter to break open the second set, 21-12. UCSB tried to rally scoring the next five points (21-17) until kills by Harlee kekauoha and Geiger stopped the momentum, 23-17. An attack in to the net by UCSB put the Anteaters up 2-0 with a 25-19 victory.

A kill by Victoria Dennis and a block by Kekauoha and Wolfe knotted the third set at 17-17.  The teams would trade points until consecutive kills by Kekauoha and Carter pushed the Anteaters in front 21-20. Kills by Kekauoha and DeSales extended the advantage to 23-21. A Gaucho kill and an Anteater attack error tied the score at 23 all. A kill by Dennis and a block by Wolfe and Anderson ended the match, 25-23.  UCSB helped the Anteater cause recording five service errors in the set, while Carter put away five kills on seven attempts in the final game.

The season will end Saturday (Nov. 29) with a 1:00 p.m. non-conference match against North Texas at the Bren Events Center. UCI will honor seniors Shelley Anderson, Arden Davis, Victoria Dennis and Danielle Geiger before the match.
