'Eaters Edge Spartans in Overtime at GCC Tournament

STOCKTON, Calif. ---- Junior Ryan Warde scored the game-winning goal with seven seconds left in overtime as UC Irvine topped San Jose State, 14-13, in the fifth-place game of the Golden Coast Conference Tournament at Chris Kjeldsen Aquatics Complex in Stockton Saturday night.

Sophomore Jack Trush led the 'Eaters (10-14) with five goals to tie his career high and Warde also equaled his career best with four goals. Freshmen Jon Polos and Sven Davidson added two goals apiece while junior goalie Matej Matijevic had 15 saves.

Ben Hauschild led the Spartans (7-21) with three goals.

UCI led 6-4 at halftime before San Jose State took a 9-8 lead late in the third quarter before Warde knotted the score at 9-9 on a power-play goal with 25 seconds left in the period.

Polos gave the Anteaters an 11-10 lead with 1:02 remaining in regulation, but the Spartans' Ashley Castle connected on a power-play goal with three seconds left in the fourth to send the game into extra time.

Trush and Warde scored in the first three-minute overtime session to put UCI up 13-12.

Giacomo Lovatelli drew San Jose State even at 13-13 on a goal with 1:03 left in the second overtime period before Warde hit the game winner.
