BERKELEY, Calif. --- UC Irvine's bid to knock off a ranked team for the first time in 11 years came up just short Wednesday night as the Anteaters fell to No. 25 California, 75-65, in overtime at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley.
The Bears capitalized on a late tip-in near the end of regulation and then outscored UCI, 13-3, in overtime.
Anteater senior guard Jaron Martin recorded a career high for the second straight game, scoring 26 points, including 19 in the second half.
Redshirt freshman guard Max Hazzard added a career-best 13 points while senior center Ioannis Dimakopoulos had eight points and three assists. Sophomore forward Jonathan Galloway pulled down a team-high six rebounds and had a pair of blocked shots.
Charlie Moore led Cal (2-0) with 38 points, scoring 27 of those in the second half. He was 15 of 17 from the free-throw line as the Bears hit 30 of 42 foul shots to UCI's 10 of 15.
The Anteaters (1-2) held Cal without a field goal for the final 7:53 of the first half to take a 31-23 lead at halftime.
The 'Eaters extended the lead to 36-23 with 19:12 left in regulation as Martin scored the first five points of the second half.
Cal pulled to within five at 43-38 on a three-point play by Kameron Rooks with 12:45 remaining, but UCI built the lead back up to 10 at 48-38 after a three by Hazzard with 11:47 left.
The Anteaters' lead dwindled to two when Moore hit a jumper with 7:38 remaining to pull the Bears within 52-50 before UCI went on a 10-5 run, capped by a Dimakopoulos three, to extend the lead to 62-55 with 3:07 left in regulation.
Moore scored five consecutive points to close the gap to 62-60 at the 1:53 mark and Rooks tipped in a missed shot by Moore with 23 seconds remaining to tie the game at 62-all.
UCI played for the last shot, but Cal's Roger Moute a Bidias stole the ball with two ticks left to send the game into overtime.
Rooks scored 30 seconds into the extra session to give the Bears a 64-62 lead, but Martin converted a pair of free throws with 3:35 remaining to tie the game at 64-64 before Stephen Domingo hit a three and Moore hit two free throws to give Cal the lead for good at 69-64.
At one point in the second half, with under 10 minutes left in regulation, Martin and Moore put on a back-and-forth clinic as Martin scored eight straight UCI points and Moore 13 consecutive for the Bears.
UCI shot 44 percent from the floor in the game and committed 11 turnovers while Cal shot 36.5 percent and had 10 miscues.
The Bears had 13 offensive rebounds and outscored the 'Eaters, 18-2, on second-chance points.
UCI was looking for its first win over a ranked team since defeating No. 13 Stanford on the road, 79- 63, Nov. 19, 2005.
"I'm proud of our guys, but to be what I think we can be, we will have to finish better than that," UCI head coach Russell Turner said in assessing Wednesday night's game.
UCI hosts Pacific Saturday night at 7:00 in the Bren Events Center before playing 10 of its next 11 games away from home.
