IRVINE, CALIF. -- Three new tournaments highlight the 2015-16 UC Irvine women's golf schedule, including the first two of the season.
The Anteaters begin at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic hosted by Colorado State on Sept. 14-15 followed by the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Invitational on Sept. 26-27. While Wyoming is the host school, the tournament will be played close to home at the Classic Club in Palm Desert.
"I am really excited to play in these first two tournaments," head coach Julie Brooks said. "It is always my goal to try and go to different places so that my players can see different parts of the country and play against different teams."
The month of October will feature two three-day tournaments. The New Mexico State Aggie Invitational runs Oct. 5-7 and the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown is on the 25-27. The Anteaters won the New Mexico State tournament in 2009.
UCI begins the spring season at the Gold Rush hosted by Long Beach State at the Old Ranch Country Club on Feb. 22-23. For the first time, the Anteaters will participate in the Bruin/Wave Invitational co-hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine on Feb. 28-29. Playing in the tournament is new, but the course is not as it will be held at the San Luis Obispo Country Club the site of three of the last four Big West Championships. The SDSU Farms Invitational on Mar. 21-23 will be the final tune-up before the Big West Championships Apr. 17-19 at the Kapalua Bay Course in Hawaii.
Junior Samantha Chan, sophomore Camille Wagg and senior Kristin Henno top the list of returnees. Chan had the team's best finish last year, placing third at the Rose City Collegiate with a career-best performance of 218. Wagg, who owned a 76.64 scoring average a year ago, led the Anteaters with a 10th place finish at the Big West Championships, firing a season-best 72 on the second round. Henno was one of three players to compete in all nine tournaments.
Sophomores Kelsey Kawaguchi and Breanne Jones and freshman Joy Kim round out the Anteater lineup. Junior Kaley In, who led UCI in scoring a season ago, will redshirt this season.
"We are still a relatively young team," Brooks noted. "The girls still need to keep working hard on developing their games both mentally and physically and try to get better every day."
