Men's Soccer Thunderstruck by No. 3 Creighton, 4-0
September 06, 2015 | Men's Soccer
OMAHA, Neb. --- Nothing seemed to fall UC Irvine's way in a 4-0 loss to third-ranked Creighton Sunday evening in Omaha in a match that included some tricky weather and a delay.
The match was halted for an hour due to lightning from a storm that had rolled in in the match's 27th minute.
No. 3 Creighton (4-0-0) had already provided plenty of thunder opening the scoring in the fourth minute as Myles Englis and Fabian Herbers teamed up on the odd-man rush to beat Anteater keeper Michael Breslin.
Englis returned to the stat sheet in the 10th minute beating Breslin in a race to a bounding ball at the top of the box touching it over the oncoming keeper and home.
Following the match's resumption, the teams found their own fire with a few yellow cards setting up the third goal in the 44th minute. A foul in the box as a corner kick was whipped in put the Jays on the penalty spot, and Herbers stepped up for his second of the game leading the match into the half with a 3-0 margin.
Creighton put the match out of reach in the 52nd minute as Herbers found Timo Pitter in the box, and his sharp strike slipped inside the near post to make it 4-0, Creighton.
UC Irvine (1-2-0) had its best chance midway through the second half as Matthew Tilley belted a free kick inches high. He added to the eight shots UCI had, three of which fell on target.
The Jays put nine of their 17 on net as Breslin registered five saves, many of which needing quite a bit of skill, in his 75 minutes of action.
Some notable points of the match include Daniel Crisostomo's first career start while other 'Eaters Thom Moreira and Elliot Farmer made their season debuts.
UCI returns to Southern California next weekend travelling to San Diego for a 7:00 p.m. match on Friday, Sept. 11, before returning home on Sunday, Sept. 13 to host San Diego State.
