Garrett Sends Anteaters to Double Overtime Win
September 04, 2015 | Women's Soccer
MORAGA, Calif. --- It took 103 minutes, but UCI found its scoring legs and went home a winner behind Tatyana Garrett's flick for the 1-0 victory over Nevada Friday afternoon on the campus of Saint Mary's.
UC Irvine (2-2-1) had been slowly gaining momentum throughout the match carrying it into overtime not allowing a Wolfpack shot for the final 46 minutes of the match.
Alex Karlowitsch nearly drove home the dagger in the 102nd minute gathering a free ball bounding in the box and firing it on net, but Nevada (0-2-1) keeper Kelsey Quintos smothered it and kept it out.
UCI came right back the next minute off the combination of Claudia Lopez and Kiana Palacios to find a wide open Garrett inside the box who slotted a shot past Quintos to end the match in the 103rd minute, 1-0.
Garrett's other game-winner in her career also came in double overtime late last year to beat CSUN.
"Tatyana Garrett has shown our team what it means to bounce back from a disappointment last week," an ecstatic coach Juniper lauded. "She trained exceptionally well, was a role model for all through the week, and she grabbed the chance with both hands in overtime, again followed by a terrific celebration."
The match itself started a little bit flat-footed with three total shots in the first half, but Head Coach Scott Juniper and her crew found another gear after the halftime whistle earning more of the possession and outshooting the Wolfpack, 5-1, in the second half.
"It always felt as though we were chopping a tree down and as the game went on we were asking ourselves which swing of the axe would do it. It was the same as in our last game, but we felt we were not swinging with the sharp edge in that one. Today, we swung the sharp edge again and again and it was a huge relief when it finally went in."
Half of the 'Eaters shots came in the 13 minutes of overtime including a wonderful chance in the 100th minute from Sammie James who had time to gather and set up from 10 yards out, but shoveled it just high of the bar.
Despite Nevada's 6-1 corner kick edge, Corey Tobin and her veteran backline did not budge earning their second consecutive shutout and running their scoreless streak to 222 minutes.
"The team came together just a little more today. They committed to having each other's backs, defended together, closed gaps, and gave us a foundation to build on."
Assists for Palacios and Lopez were their second and first on the year, respectively. Lopez scored her point in her first minutes of the season.
The Anteaters finish their northern weekend on Sunday, Sept. 6 with a 1:30 p.m. match against Colorado State, a squad that fell, 1-0, to the unbeaten hosts, Saint Mary's, earlier in the day. The match will once again be live streamed. Follow the squad on their UCIwsoc Facebook and Twitter accounts for any updates.
