IRVINE, Calif. --- First year head coach Ashlie Hain and the UC Irvine women's volleyball team faces 2015 head on with the Anteaters tackling eight NCAA Tournament teams on the slate.
UCI, which opens the season with nine straight contests on the road, dives into its tough slate against LSU, an NCAA Tournament second-round participant (Aug. 28) at the American Campus Classic. After meeting the Tigers for the first time in school history, the Anteaters then battle host Texas (Aug. 29), a post-season semifinal team before closing the tournament against Rice (Aug. 29).
The Anteaters then travel to Moscow, Idaho in the second week of action to take on Washington State (Sept. 4), former Big West member, Idaho (Sept. 5), and Seattle (Sept. 5) in the Idaho Volleyball Classic.
UCI will face Minnesota for the first time since 1989 when the Anteaters compete in the Diet Coke Classic, Sept. 11-12. Following a face-off against the Gophers (Sept. 11) , UCI tackles UCF (Sept. 12), winners of the American Athletic Conference in 2014. The meeting against the Knights will be the first for the two teams since 1996 and UCI's contest against North Dakota State later that afternoon will be the first match against the Bison.
The demanding slate continues when the Anteaters battle three NCAA Tournament teams in their first weekend at home as part of the LBSU/UCI Mizuno Invitational, an event that will be co-hosted by the Anteaters and 49ers. UCI's home opener will pit the team against UCLA in a morning match before hosting Oregon State in the nightcap with both matches at Crawford Court. The team then entertains San Diego Sept. 19 at the Bren Events Center.
The Big West race begins with local trips to CSUN (Sept. 25) and Black and Blue rival, Long Beach State, Sept. 26.
The Anteaters return to Crawford Court to host Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 30) before traveling to UC Davis (Oct. 3). Cal Poly and UC Riverside will make the trip to Crawford Court, Oct. 8 and 10, respectively, before UCI travels to Hawaii to battle the Rainbow Wahine, who reached the second round of postseason play last year.
Following a visit to Cal State Fullerton (Oct. 23) and UC Riverside (Oct. 24), UCI will play its remaining contests at the Bren Events Center, beginning with Long Beach State (Oct. 29) and CSUN (Oct. 31).
The Anteaters make their final conference trek to Cal Poly (Nov. 6) and UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 7) before hosting Hawaii (No. 17), UC Davis (Nov. 21) and UC Santa Barbara (Nov. 24) to close out the regular season.
UCI, 19-12 overall last season, brings back 10 letterwinners including three All-Big West performers. Outside hitter Marisa Bubica was a first-team choice after leading UCI with a 4.12 kill average. Also returning are all-conference honorable mention honorees, Shelley Anderson, who enters the season sixth in the Anteater career annals with 2,224 assists and Arden Davis, who recorded 515 digs to come in at No. 7 in the single-season records.
