LUBBOCK, Texas --- UC Irvine is tied for 11th place after Thursday's opening round of the NCAA Regional at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas.
The 'Eaters and Georgia State are tied after shooting 3-over rounds of 287 Thursday. Texas leads at 11-under par 273, Houston is second at 10-under 274 and Duke is third with an 8-under 276. Host Texas Tech is in fourth at 278 while Purdue and California are tied for fifth place at 279.
UCI senior Pete Fernandez opened with a 1-under 70 and is in 21st place. Junior Jacob Schulze and sophomore Bryan Shin each shot rounds of 1-over 72 and are tied for 42nd.
Freshman Jonathan Young (73) is in 56th place and freshman David Kim (74) is 61st.
Purdue's Austin Eoff is the individual leader after shooting 6-under 65. Five players are tied for second at 5-under 66.
The 'Eaters are paired with Charleston Southern and Georgia State for Friday's second round beginning at 6:55 a.m. (PT) off the 10th tee.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams following Saturday's final round will advance to the NCAA Finals May 29-June 3 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
