Mason Miller Sets UCI Record in Shot Put

 

WALNUT, Calif. --- Senior Mason Miller broke the UC Irvine record in the shot put that had stood for 38 years at the Mt. SAC Relays Friday.

Miller registered a mark of 58-5 ¼ (17.81m), breaking the previous school mark of 58-4 ¼ set by Kris Lettow in 1977.

Miller finished fifth in the event, which was won by USC's Nicholas Ponzio at 63-2 ¼.

In other action at Mt. SAC's Hilmer Lodge Stadium Friday, UCI's Brandon Howard placed 28th overall in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.20.

Alex Tebbe was 29th in the 5,000 meters in 14:54.78.

Kyle Hubbard finished 31st overall in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.93 and Cameron Vaca was 33rd with a time of 15.02.

At the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, sophomore Isaiah Thompson placed 12th of 119 competitors overall in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.30 and Julian Lujan finished 70th in 1:57.99.

Izzak Mireles placed 34th overall in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:48.75, Nolan Del Valle was 67th (15:08.37) and Blake Wanser 115th (16:00.34).

Eric Enriquez was 46th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:02.91.

In the 1500 meters, Jake Williams placed 78th overall in 3:55.84, Thompson was 89th (3:57.70), Tommy Newton-Neal 112th (4:01.02), Riley Martin 127th (4:03.15) and Alex Allevato 186th (4:16.53).
