Box Score Fullerton, Calif. -- The free throw line was the difference in UC Irvine's 66-54 loss to Cal State Fullerton Thursday at Titan Gym.
The Titans were 26-31 from the free throw line for the game, while UCI was 12-20. CSF scored 15 of their 30 points in the second half from the line. Conversely, the Anteaters were 5-11 in the second stanza from the stripe.
UCI was led by sophomore Mokun Fajemisin with 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Forwards Methlyn Onogomuho and Shereen Sutherland each added nine points and guards Madison McKenney and Irene Chavez each pitched in six points.
Cal State Fullerton seniors made the most of their final regular season appearance at Titan Gym, accounting for 48 points. Kathleen Iwuaoha lead all players with 21 points and 18 rebounds, while Chante Miles went 14-14 from the line and ended with 20 points, four assists and three steals. Daeja Smith and Samantha Logan each had six points in the win.
Cal State Fullerton pulled away after scoring eight straight points to lead 18-10 at 11:36. A layup by Kathleen Iwuoha with three seconds on the clock gave the Titans its largest lead of the half, 36-23 at intermission.
UCI would rally in the second half on a 14-3 run which was capped by a Brittany Glassow layup at 10:17 to draw the Anteaters within 44-42. The Titans responded with the next five to extend the lead back to 49-43 at 6:51. In the final four minutes, Fullerton would hit 11-12 free throws to help secure the victory.
UCI (7-23, 4-11) is the No. 8 seed for next week's Big West Tournament and Cal State Fullerton (11-17, 5-10) locks up the No. 7 seed. The tournament begins Tuesday (Mar. 10) at Titan Gym. The Anteaters will play the 6:00 p.m. game with the opponent to be determined following Saturday's slate of games.
