Three-Pointers The Difference In UC Irvine's Loss to Long Beach State

Irvine, Calif. – Long-range shooting was the key to Long Beach State's 62-46 victory over UC Irvine in a Black & Blue Rivalry game presented by Duke's of Huntington Beach at the Bren Events Center Thursday.
The Forty-Niners tied their season-high, draining 11 three-pointers to UCI's 1.
Fajemisin led UCI with her third consecutive double-double, posting a game-high 16 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. The sophomore went 5-11 from the floor and 6-8 from the line plus added two assists and a steal in 36 minutes of action.
UCI guard Irene Chavez added 11 points, while forward Methlyn Onogomuho had eight points and eight rebounds.
The Anteaters shot 29.1 percent (16-55) from the floor and 76.5 percent from the line (13-17). Long Beach State shot 38.7 percent (24-62) from the field, including going 11-29 from three-point range. The teams each had 42 rebounds.
Long Beach State was led by Lauren Spargo with 16 points off the bench, hitting 4-8 three pointers. Alex Sanchez recorded 12 points and Hallie Meneses knocked down three threes and ended with nine points and a game-best six assists.
The Forty-Niners started the night with four consecutive three-pointers and opened a 12-4 lead at 17:29. With the Forty-Niners on top 22-12, Alex Sanchez scored seven straight points for Long Beach State to extend the advantage to 29-12 at 12:29. LBSU would hold a 39-24 lead at the half.
The Anteaters would close within 11 points four times, the last at 7:47 (50-39) on a Fajemisin layup, but LBSU would hit a three-pointer on the next three possessions to push the lead back to 18 (59-41) at 3:41.
The Anteaters fall to 4-19 overall and 1-7 in league action, while LBSU improves to 19-3 overall and 6-2 in the Big West.
UCI will travel to UC Davis Saturday (Feb. 7) for a 2:00 p.m. game at The Pavilion.
