Records Fall as No. 5 Anteaters Claim Fifth Place

IRVINE, Calif. --- No. 5 UC Irvine put up its best showing ever at the UC Irvine Invitational finishing fifth in the lowest-scoring match in program history to down No. 7 Hawai'I, 3-2, Sunday afternoon.

The match may as well been halted with 2:17 remaining in the second period as McKenna Mitchell put away the 'Eaters' third, final, and game-winning strike. Neither side would find the back of the net through the final 18+ minutes of play in a bizarre match at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Cambria Shockley got the offense going with two seconds left in the first period to give UCI (8-5) the one-goal advantage through the opening period.

Hawai'I answered each of the first two deficits it found itself in on goals from Chloe Barr and Paula Chillida Esforzado, but never leveled with the Anteaters following Mitchell's goal.

The 3-2 final goes down as the lowest-scoring match in program history, and happened to be a win. The 'Eaters have been a part of two 4-2 matches in the past.

Danielle Warde was responsible for the third Anteater goal. She also added two steals and earned an exclusion. Kelsey Thornton had a pair of steals along with an assist. The 'Eaters piled up four field blocks led by Mitchell's pair. Keeper Jillian Yocum had nine of her own while Sarah Logan stopped seven.

The 'Eaters get back to it on Friday, Feb. 27, with a 3:00 p.m. match at San Diego State
