Late Run Lift Grand Canyon To Victory Over UC Irvine, 58-53

Irvine, Calif. – Grand Canyon out-scored UC Irvine 23-12 in the fourth quarter to lift the Antelopes to a 58-53 win at the Bren Events Center Monday.

A pair of Shereen Sutherland free throws gave UCI a 46-41 advantage with 4:53 to play, but the Antelopes would go on a 14-3 run and take a 55-49 lead with 38 seconds remaining. Paulina Santana would knock down a three-pointer at 29 seconds to keep the game within a possession (55-52). After a GCU free throw, Teirra Hicks made the first of two free throws (56-53) and the Anteaters grabbed offensive rebounds to set up not one, but two three-point attempts with no avail. Jessica Gajewski would be fouled with eight seconds left and hit two free throws for the final 58-53 score.  

Sutherland scored her season-high 17 points for the third consecutive game to lead UCI. She went 6-12 from the floor, 5-5 from the line and had eight rebounds. Mokun Fajemisin recorded a team-best 10 rebounds and four blocks to go with nine points, matching Paulina Santana's nine points. Mckenzie Piper and Raelyn Cheung-Sutton each had six points.

Grand Canyon, who improves to 5-6 overall, was led by Courtney Hayes with 15 points. Dana Jones recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Jessica Gajewski also scored in double-figures (10).

UCI out-shot GCU .368-.344 from the floor, but the Antelopes out-rebounded the Anteaters 49-32. Grand Canyon was 15-21 from the line, while UCI was 9-11.

GCU lead 21-16 with 6:52 in the second period before the Anteaters out-scored the Antelopes 14-4 to take a 31-25 halftime lead. Sutherland and Santana each scored six points in the spurt to end the half. The Anteaters kept the momentum going in the third period, building UCI's largest lead of 41-33 on a Mokun Fajemisin layup with 38 seconds to go in the quarter. UCI led 41-36 heading in the final period.

UCI snaps a two-game winning streak (3-6) and will head to No. 19 UCLA Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. game at Pauley Pavilion.
