Box Score Las Vegas, Nevada -- UNLV dealt UC Irvine a 72-52 non-conference loss at Cox Pavilion Saturday afternoon.
UCI forward Mokun Fajemisin posted her first double-double of the season with a season-high 16 points and 11 rebounds. The junior also swatted three blocks. Guard Irene Chavez drained three three-pointers and ended the game with 13 points. Mckenzie Piper added seven points and six rebounds while Shereen Sutherland recorded seven rebounds to go with three points.
The Lady Rebels had four players in double-digit scoring led by Aley Rohde with 15 points. Brooke Johnson had 13, Nikki Wheatley had 12 and a team-best 10 rebounds and Dakota Gonzalez totaled 11 points.
UNLV shot 50 percent (8-16 ) in the first period, but was shooting over 71 percent at the media timeout (4:39). Despite shooting just 26.3 percent (5-19), the Anteaters stayed close scoring the final five points of the quarter on a three-pointer by Irene Chavez and a basket by Mokun Fajemisin, 18-15.
The free throw line was the difference in the second period as UNLV made 9-11 and held a 32-23 advantage at the half.
UNLV pulled away in the third quarter, out-scoring UCI 27-15.
The Anteaters go to 1-2 on the year, while UNLV improves to 3-0.
UC Irvine will compete in the Loyola Marymount Thanksgiving Classic Friday and Saturday. The Anteaters will battle nationally-ranked Princeton Friday (Nov. 27) at 1:00 p.m. in Gersten Pavilion.
