UC Irvine Tops UCSB, 7-4, at MPSF Tourney

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- A string of five consecutive goals propelled UC Irvine to a 7-4 win over UC Santa Barbara in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at USC Saturday.

Trailing 2-1 late in the first quarter, the Anteaters (16-11) reeled off five straight goals.

Scores from Lovre Milos (1:00) and Ryan Warde (0:26) put UCI up 3-2 at the end of the first period.

The teams played a scoreless second quarter, then UCI unleashed the offense again in the third on goals by Warde (6:50), Milos (5:37) and Pablo Carballo (4:44) to surge ahead 6-2.

A late UCSB goal in the third quarter narrowed the margin to 6-3, but UCI's Matt Skinner answered in the fourth with 5:00 remaining.  The Gauchos tacked on a goal with 1:56 left for the final margin.

Milos led the 'Eaters with three goals and Warde scored a pair.  Senior goalie Dylan Peterson recorded 16 saves.

Derek Shoemaker scored two goals to lead UCSB (16-11).

UCI faces Stanford in the fifth-place game Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
