SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Seventh-ranked UC Irvine lost a heartbreaker on the road, 6-5, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at UC Santa Barbara Saturday.
The 'Eaters took a 5-2 lead in the third quarter before No. 6 UCSB scored the game's last four goals to pull out the win on a goal in the final second of the game.
Back-to-back goals by UCI's Lovre Milos midway through the third period put the 'Eaters up 5-2 with 1:39 left in the quarter before UCSB's Spencer Likins cut the margin to 5-3 on a score with 35 seconds left.
Liam Gaughan scored with 6:20 left in the fourth quarter to bring the Gauchos within 5-4 and Mitchell Hamilton tied the game with 4:36 remaining.
Derek Shoemaker converted the game-winner with 0.8 seconds left in regulation as UCSB improved to 14-8 overall and 3-4 in the MPSF.
The Gauchos led 1-0 after the first quarter, but goals from Kyle Trush and Jared Osborn in the second period put UCI up 2-1 at halftime.
Matt Skinner scored early in the third quarter for a 3-1 Anteater lead and Shane Hauschild answered for UCSB before Milos scored his consecutive goals to extend UCI's lead to three.
Senior goalie Dylan Peterson had 15 saves for UCI (11-8, 1-4), which hosts fifth-ranked Stanford Sunday at noon in an MPSF game at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
