Calzada, Lara Nail Home Weekly Big West Awards

IRVINE, Calif. --- Men's soccer's two-win week was rewarded with offensive and defensive honors for two of its players, Eduardo Calzada and Jorge Lara.
The senior Calzada scored Big West Offensive Player of the Week honors as he put up a five-point week for the 'Eaters beginning with a pair of goals in the 5-1 win over UC Riverside, his second career two-goal match, which included the game-winner. He added an assist in the 2-0 win at CSUN Saturday night to vault the 'Eaters into a tie for second place in the Big West South.
Completing the award week was a first for freshman Jorge Lara named Big West Defensive Player of the Week following his first two career goals in successive matches. After UC Riverside cut the lead back to one, Lara was there to slide home his first-ever tally minutes later to stretch the lead back to two en route to the 5-1 win. He made his presence known early on Saturday putting home the opening goal in the second minute, the eventual game-winner in a 2-0 win.
The honor for each player was their first in their careers. It also marks the first for the team in 2015 as it continues to ascend in the Big West standings. UCI will look to lock up a tournament spot and continuing to strive toward a Big West title.
