UC Irvine Falls to Top-Ranked UCLA, 15-8

 

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was stunned by a seven-goal barrage from top-ranked UCLA in the first quarter as the Bruins went on to defeat the 'Eaters, 15-8, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Anteater Aquatics Complex Sunday.

The undefeated Bruins (21-0, 5-0 MPSF) jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Pablo Carballo put UCI on the board with 3:34 left in the opening period.

After UCLA extended the lead to 7-1, the Anteaters' Chris Swieca scored with 16 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 7-2 after one.

Patrick Fellner scored a power-play goal to put UCLA up 8-2 with 6:26 left in the second quarter before Carballo answered at the 4:51 mark for UCI's lone score of the period.  The Bruins tacked on two more goals to take a 10-3 lead at halftime.

UCLA built a 12-3 margin late in the third quarter before UCI's Matt Skinner scored with 2:07 left to make it 12-4 entering the final period.

The Anteaters' Jared Osborn scored back-to-back goals at the 6:36 and 5:33 marks to slice the deficit to 12-6, but UCLA answered with two straight scores to take a 14-6 lead.

Osborn notched his third goal of the quarter with 1:46 remaining before UCLA's Max Irving and UCI's Lovre Milos traded goals in the final two minutes.

Seventh-ranked UCI, 11-7 overall and 1-3 in the MPSF, travels to UC Santa Barbara Saturday before hosting Stanford next Sunday in league games at noon.
