
'Eaters Hold Off Waves, 13-12, at SoCal Invitational

MALIBU, Calif. --- UC Irvine built a six-goal lead in the third quarter and held off Pepperdine, 13-12, in the Kap7 SoCal Invitational at Malibu Saturday.
The seventh-ranked Anteaters were up 6-2 after one quarter, led 9-5 at halftime and forged ahead 12-6 on a goal by Kyle Trush with 1:10 left in the third period.
Pepperdine cut the deficit in half to 12-9 on a score from Wesley Sherburne with 7:43 remaining in the fourth quarter.
UCI sophomore Ryan Warde scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 6:43 left in the final period to put the 'Eaters up 13-9.
The ninth-ranked Waves then scored three times in a span of less than three minutes, but UCI was able to hold on for the final 3:32 to claim the victory in improving to 10-2 on the season.
Lovre Milos led the 'Eaters with four goals, Kyle Trush had three and Warde two.
"We came out strong and had some good goals from Trush and Lovre," UCI head coach Marc Hunt said. "Defensively, we were strong until the fourth-quarter surge from Pepperdine. Dylan Peterson stayed strong in the cage and we held them off for a good win."
UCI faces top-ranked UCLA at 2:40 Saturday afternoon at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
