Hawaii Takes Down UC Irvine, 85-50

Irvine, Calif. – Hawaii dominated UC Irvine, 85-50 at the Bren Events Center Saturday.

Hawaii (11-7, 3-2) overwhelmed UCI (3-17, 0-5) on the glass, out-rebounding the Anteaters 53-32. The Rainbow Wahine shot 51.6 percent from the floor, including 7-12 from three-point range, in the second half as they out-scored UCI, 50-30 in the final 20 minutes.

UCI was led by forward Mokun Fajemisin with 16 points, five rebounds and four blocks followed by guard Irene Chavez with 13 points and four assists. Guard Madison McKenney went 3-5 from the floor and added seven points. Guard Tierra Hicks matched Fajemisin with a team-high five rebounds.

Five Hawaii players scored in double-figures led by Marissa Wimbley with 13. Morgan Mason tallied 12 points, while Connie Morris, Destiny King and Briana Harris each scored 11 points. Morris also had a game-high seven rebounds.

Hawaii used a 19-3 run, which included three three-pointers to take control of the game, 28-13 at 4:55. The Rainbow Wahine would maintain the 15-point lead at the half (35-20).

A pair of Irene Chavez free throws got UCI within 16 points (40-24) at 17:04, but that would be as close as the Anteaters would get the rest of the game.

UCI will travel to UC Santa Barbara Thursday (Jan. 29) for a 7:00 p.m. showdown at the Thunderdome.
