Irvine, Calif. – Senior Zack La Cavera tied his career-high with 19 kills to lead third-ranked UC Irvine to a 3-0 sweep of Cal Baptist (25-13, 30-28, 22-25, 25-14) at the Bren Events Center Tuesday.
UCI extends its winning streak to six as the Anteaters improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF. Cal Baptist is 2-4 on the year and 0-3 in the MPSF.
La Cavera hit .457 (19-3-35) and recorded six digs and five block assists. Outside hitter Tamir Hershko had 17 kills to extend his streak of kills in double-figures to seven. Middle blocker Jason Agopian had a career-high 11 kills and five total blocks while outside hitte Travis Woloson sparked UCI with a season-high seven kills. Setter Michael Saeta totaled a season-high 52 set assists and tied his career-high with five aces.
Rocky DeLyon led Cal Baptist with 14 kills, while Kevin Kustura had a match-high 11 digs.
The Anteaters out-hit (.381-.156), out-dug (34-22) and out-blocked (12-8) the Lancers. UCI fired nine aces to Cal Baptist's four.
UCI hit .407 to Cal Baptist's -.160 in the first set and the Anteaters cruised to a 25-13 win. The Anteaters rattled off seven in a row twice during a 14-2 run to break open the set, 21-10. Zack La Cavera and Tamir Hershko carried the offensive load, recording five and four kills, respectively.
In the second set, UCI attack errors helped Cal Baptist to an early 4-1 lead and they would continue to hold the 17-12 advantage. The Anteaters chipped away until a Travis Woloson one arm dig traveled back over the net and landed between all the Lancers to tie the set at 22-22. Back-to-back Cal Baptist attack errors, the last a block by Woloson and Marty Ross gave UCI the 30-28 victory.
Cal Baptist won the third set 25-22, snapping UCI's set streak at 15.
A pair of UCI blocks helped the Anteaters start the fourth set 7-2 and they went on to the 25-14 win.
The third-ranked Anteaters will host No. 5 USC Friday (Jan.23) at 7:00 p.m. in the Bren Events Center.
