Triton Invitational Central
LA JOLLA, Calif. --- Matt Skinner and Lovre Milos scored three goals apiece to lead eighth-ranked UC Irvine past No. 11 UC Davis, 9-5, in the Triton Invitational at La Jolla Sunday.
Skinner scored two of his goals in the first half and Pablo Carballo added a score in the second quarter to give the 'Eaters a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Jacob Mourer and Skinner scored consecutive goals to open the third quarter for a 5-0 margin. Ryan Warde scored between a couple of UC Davis goals to give UCI a 6-2 lead entering the final period.
Lovre Milos scored all three of his goals in the fourth quarter, including on a penalty shot drawn by Alan Robertson that put the 'Eaters in front 8-3.
Dylan Peterson made his third consecutive start in goal and registered 13 saves.
"Our team defense was our best part of this game," UCI head coach Marc Hunt said. "Going in, we wanted to keep UC Davis to five goals or less.
"We had decent production offensively, but could have been better. Skinner and Lovre found the net well and Robertson drew a clutch penalty shot in the fourth that put the game away.
"I am concerned, however, that some of our younger guys showed a lack of maturity. This must be corrected or we will struggle," Hunt added.
UCI closes out its play in the invitational against La Verne Sunday at 2:50 p.m. at Canyonview Pool.
