IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine opens its 2014-15 schedule in the Nick Watney Invitational at Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 29-30).
The 10-team tournament features 54 holes with 36 holes Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday. There will be a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Monday with players going off the first and 10th tees on Tuesday, beginning at 8:00 a.m.
The tournament is named for former Fresno State All-American and current PGA golfer, Nick Watney.
Sunnyside is a par-72 course that plays at 6,950 yards from the championship tees. Joining UCI and host Fresno State in the field are Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, CSUN, Grand Canyon, Pacific, Sacramento State, Santa Clara and UC Riverside.
The lineup for the 'Eaters, under the guidance of 17th-year UCI head coach Paul Smolinski, is expected to be freshman David Kim, junior Jacob Schulze, senior Bhuvan Potluri, sophomore Bryan Shin and senior Pete Fernandez. Freshman Jonathan Young will be competing as an individual.
Fernandez led the 'Eaters with a 73.06 and six top-10 finishes last season en route to All-Big West Conference first team honors. He was medalist at the Anteater Invitational and competed at the NCAA Regional in Eugene, Ore., placing 39th.
Potluri had a 75.20 average as a junior with a top finish of 11th at the Anteater Invitational.
Schulze had a 75.69 average for the season with two top-20 finishes, including 12th at the Folino Invitational.
Shin played in three tournaments with a 76.89 average and posted a top finish of 26th at the OGIO-UCSB Intercollegiate.
Kim is from Eastside Christian High School and Young is from Los Alamitos High.
Following the Nick Watney Invitational, UCI will compete in the Southern Dunes Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the University of Wyoming, at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz., Oct. 4-5.
