UCI Backcourt Duo Competing in European U20 Championship

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine backcourt teammates Luke Nelson and Alex Young are members of the Great Britain Under-20 team that begins play in the European U20 Championship this week.

Great Britain opens again Latvia Tuesday (July 8) in pool play at Heraklion Arena on the Greek island of Crete.

The U20 team faces Hungary Wednesday, Greece Friday and Lithuania Saturday to complete pool play.  The semifinals are July 19 with the final on July 20.

Nelson, from Worthing, England, was the Big West Conference Freshman of the Year for UCI this past season.  He led the Anteaters in scoring at 11.8 points per game and also topped the team with 74 threes and 38 steals.  Nelson was named to the All-Big West second team.

Nelson also has been named to the Great Britain Senior National Team for the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round in August.  He has been named England Player of the Year four times on various levels (U16, U18 and Division I).

Young (Phoenix, Ore.), entering his junior season at UCI, has dual citizenship as his mother, Louise, is from England.

A 2014 All-Big West honorable mention selection last season, Young led the 'Eaters with 161 assists and he already ranks seventh in UCI history with 305 career assists.

Young averaged 8.9 points as a sophomore and ranked 58th nationally with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.3 for the 'Eaters, who finished the season 23-12 overall and won the Big West regular-season title with a 13-3 mark.
