UC Irvine Caps 2014 Season With College World Series Appearance

  • The Anteaters embarked on an incredible postseason run and made their second College World Series appearance.

 GILLESPIE GUIDES 'EATERS TO FOURTH POSTSEASON APPEARANCE
  • Mike Gillespie continues to prove to be one of the top collegiate coaches after winning National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Coach of the Year and American Baseball Coaches Association West Region Coach of the Year awards.
  • In his seventh season at the helm of the Anteater program, Gillespie led the program to its second College World Series appearance, marking the fifth time he has skippered the Anteaters to the postseason.
  • UCI strung together a 10-game win streak and at one point recorded 13 consecutive Big West victories.
  • After the team dropped six straight to end the regular season, the Anteaters orchestrated a postseason run that included an upset of No. 1 national seed, Oregon State at the Corvallis Regional, and a sweep of Oklahoma State in super regional play.
  • The team then opened the College World Series with a win over Texas before falling to Vanderbilt and the Longhorns in an elimination game to finish with a 6-3 postseason record.
  • Gillespie reached 1000 career wins and finishes his 27th year of coaching at the Division I level with a record of 1037-615-2.
  • Five Anteaters were named All-Big West, including Andrew Morales, who was named the conference's Pitcher of the Year, bringing the total to 49 all-conference players recognized during Gillespie's tenure.
  • Andrew Morales and Sam Moore collected a combined seven All-America honors. 
 MORALES SETS BAR
  • Andrew Morales becomes the winningest pitcher in UCI history after posting a .913 (21-2) win percentage. He rewrites a record previously held by Ray Humphries, who logged a .893 percentage (25-3) from 1973-74.
  • The right-hander also ends his Anteater stint with a lifetime ERA of 1.68, becoming the only UCI hurler to post a career earned run average below 2.00.
  • With an ERA of 1.53 this season, Morales set a new single-season mark and now holds two of the top four records in the Anteater logs.
  • Morales ended the year as the national leader and the UCI single-season record holder in strikeouts with 141.
  • It is the second 40-year old record erased by the All-American, who dethroned Gary Wheelock, a right-hander who fanned 140 batters in 1974.
  • With 19 starts this year, Morales finished tied for first in the country and in the UCI record books. 
  • Morales  recorded an .846 (11-2) win percentage in his senior campaign to finish sixth in single-season history.
  • He posted the 15th-best WHIP at 0.90 and with 11 wins ranked 13th in the nation.

SPENCER HITS TOP FIVE

  • Over three seasons, Connor Spencer hit .351 to finish fifth in the UCI career records.
  • He peppered the diamond with 222 career hits to place 10th in Anteater career history.
  • He also laced 13 career doubles to take over the No. 5 spot in the record books.
  • Spencer shares the top spot in the single-season records with Taylor Sparks and Chris Rabago with 66 games played.
  • The first baseman made his way into the single-season books with 250 at-bats to finish at No. 6.
  • Spencer posted 91 hits this year to tie for third in the single-season record books and was 34th in the country. He becomes the fifth Anteater to record 90 hits in a year.
  • In nine postseason games, Spencer batted .382 with 13 hits, six runs batted in an six runs scored.
  • Spencer was an eighth-round pick by the New York Yankees.
 SPARKS LIGHTS UP RECORD BOOKS
  • Taylor Sparks, a second-round draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, concludes his Anteater career in the No. 3 spot with 16 triples.
  • The third baseman was one triple shy of tying for the top spot, held by Rod Spence (1972-75) and Jeff Malinoff (1971-74).
  • He is fourth in career round trippers with 18 after blasting five in 2014.
  • With 253 at-bats this year, Sparks slides into a tie for the fourth spot in the season annals. 
  • He had nine triples this year to tie for the No. 2 spot with Taylor Holiday (2007) and Larry Dotson (1980). He fell one triple short of Jeff Malinoff's record of 10 which was posted in 1972.
  • Sparks topped the 'Eaters in the postseason, batting .417 with 15 hits, including three doubles, a pair of triples and a home run to go along with four RBI.
 MANARINO PROVIDES RELIEF HEROICS
  • Evan Manarino, who struggled with consistency in the early part of the season, proved to be an anchor in the latter half of the season.
  • In six postseason games, Manarino made four appearances, including one start and struck out 14 in 12.1 innings. 
  • He was 1-1 with a save and limited teams to a .182 batting average while allowed just two earned runs for a 1.46 ERA.
  • Among the College World Series leaders, he tied for ninth with a 1.29 ERA.
  • The lefty dealt 6.1 innings of one-run baseball in the start against Texas but was the hard-luck loser in a 1-0 defeat.
  • Manarino finished the year with a 4-4 record and 2.66 earned run average.
  • He fanned 56 batters in 64.1 innings and walked just nine batters in 23 appearances.
 BROCK BREAKS INTO TOP 10
  • Evan Brock concluded his 'Eater career with a 2.95 earned run average and ties for 10th in the record books.
  • The right-hander also claimed the No. 10 spot with 76 career appearances.
  • Brock was 1-0 and made three appearances at the College World Series.
  • He struck out eight in 7.2 innings and gave up just one run on four hits, while holding Texas and Vanderbilt to a .160 batting average.
  • In nine postseason games, Brock was 1-1 with a 2.87 ERA.
  • He made four appearances, including one start, and fanned 12 in 15.2 innings of work.
 ALCANTARA TOPS TEAM AT CWS
  • Adam Alcantara batted.375 in three games at the College World Series to lead UCI.
  • The freshman outfielder had three hits , batting 3 for 5 in two games against Texas and then driving in and scoring one run against Vanderbilt.
  • On the year, Alcantara hit .323 with 20 hits and nine runs batted in while scoring eight.
 MOORE ENDS YEAR AS SINGLE-SEASON RECORD
  • Sam Moore set a new mark with 23 saves in 2014.
  • Along with the Anteater record, Moore also erased the Big West mark of 20.
  • Moore's 32 appearances rank fourth in the UCI single-season annals.
  • Moore ended the season at the Gregg Olson "Breakout Player of the Year" award.
 ANOTHER ACE IN THE HOLE
  • Elliot Surrey went largely unnoticed despite succeeding in several high pressure situations in 2014.
  • The sophomore lefty made three starts with one relief appearance in the postseason and struck out 14 in 19.1 innings.
  • He made a seven-inning start against No. 1 Oregon State and struck out eight while holding the Beavers to a pair of runs.
  • He then faced OSU again and locked down his first career save with an inning one one-hit relief to clinch the regional title.
  • Making his first super regional appearance, Surrey opened the series against Oklahoma State and proceeded to hold the Cowboys to two unearned runs on five hits in seven innings of work.
  • Surrey's final start of the year came in the effort against Vanderbilt, where he suffered a 6-4 loss after surrendering fie runs on seven hits in 4.1 frames.
  • Surrey ends the year with tied for third in the UCI records with 18 starts.
