IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine skipper, Mike Gillespie, was named the American Baseball Coaches Association West Region Coach of the Year for the third time in his career and first at the helm of the Anteaters.
Gillespie led UCI to its second College World Series appearance, leading the Anteaters past UNLV and No. 1 national seed, Oregon State, at the Corvallis Regional and then guiding the team to a sweep of Oklahoma State at the Stillwater Super Regional. UCI went 1-2 at the College World Series, splitting a pair of games against Texas and suffering a loss to Vanderbilt.
The Anteaters finished the season at 41-25, marking the fourth time a UCI team has reached the 40-win plateau in Gillespie's seven-year tenure. UCI's College World Series appearance is the program's fifth NCAA postseason run under Gillespie and the ninth time for a program that was reinstated in 2002.
Gillespie became the 16th active coach to reach a 1000 victories and now owns a record of 1037-615-2. He was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Coach of the Year last week and during his time at UCI, has mentored six Big West Pitchers of the Year, 50 All-Big West Conference honorees and his players have collected over 30 All-America awards since 2008.
