DAVIS, Calif. --- UC Irvine sophomore Melanie Speech is in sixth place after the first day of the heptathlon in the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships at Davis.
Speech has 2,815 points after the first four events Friday, a first-day personal-best for her.
She recorded the top mark in the shot put in the field of 15 competitors with a personal-record effort of 41-8 ½ (12.71m), which ranks ninth-best in UCI history.
Speech ran 15.39 in the 100-meter hurdles, had a mark of 4-7 ½ in the high jump and finished the 200 meters in 26.05.
Danielle Littleton of UC Riverside leads the heptathlon with 3,028 points, Kaleigh Morrison of Hawai'i is second with 3,010 and Olympia Jewett from Cal State Northridge is third with 2,962 points.
The final three events are Saturday with the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meters at Toomey Field and Woody Wilson Track on the UC Davis campus.
