DAVIS, Calif. --- UC Irvine sophomore Melanie Speech recorded a personal-best total in finishing fifth in the heptathlon at the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships that concluded Saturday in Davis.
Speech (San Francisco/Lowell HS) compiled 4,672 points, which ranks No. 9 in UCI history. That total passes her previous best of 4,602 points that she recorded in March at the UC Riverside Spring Classic Invitational.
On Saturday, Speech had a mark of 17-9 ¾ in the long jump (680 points), threw the javelin 114-7 (570) and finished the 800 meters in 2:37.05 (607).
Her fifth-place finish earned the Anteaters four team points heading into next weekend's Big West Track & Field Championships, also at Toomey Field and Woody Wilson Track in Davis Friday and Saturday.
The fifth-place showing was the best league finish for a UCI heptathlete since Lauren Collins was conference champion in 2007.
Speech's 4,672 points are 277 more than she totaled in placing 10th at last year's Big West meet.
Kaleigh Morrison from Hawai'i won this year's conference heptathlon with 5,210 points.
