LA JOLLA, Calif. --- UC Irvine closed strong on the final day of competition at the Cal/Nevada Championships in La Jolla Saturday.
The Anteaters finished third of 25 teams with 84 points in the competition at Triton Track & Field Stadium on the UC San Diego campus. San Diego State won the meet with 178 points and Long Beach State was second with 123.
Senior Ericka Nowell placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.04 and sophomore Kaulyn Lee-McNeill was fourth in 60.53.
Itos Aikhionbare earned second place in the shot put with a mark of 48-11 ¾ while Chelsea Schneider (2:12.93) and Marie Brashears (2:18.74) were third and ninth, respectively, in the 800 meters.
Megan George continued her stellar freshman campaign with a fourth-place showing in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.09 and Paige Bushnell finished seventh in 14.33.
Hannah Ruby, also a freshman, placed seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:12.48, fourth-best in Anteater history.
Kaycee Holcomb earned a pair of team points for UCI with an eighth-place finish of 4:41.17 in the 1500 meters.
The Anteaters' 4x400 relay of Nowell, George, Lee-McNeill and Bushnell finished fourth in 3:47.34 and the 4x100 relay of Melanie Speech, Megan Benson, Charity Lyons and Bushnell were fifth with a time of 47.85.
UCI hosts the Big West Challenge Cup Friday at Anteater Stadium with field events beginning at 2:00 p.m. and the first track event at 6:00 p.m.
