Pete Fernandez Leads UC Irvine at Western Intercollegiate

 

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. --- Junior Pete Fernandez led UC Irvine on the first day of the 68th Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz Saturday.

Fernandez is in a four-way tie for seventh place at 2-under 138 following two rounds of 69 each on the par-70 course that measures 6,615 yards.

Ryan O'Connor (73-71) and Ryan Knapp (69-75) are tied for 34th place at 144.  Bhuvan Potluri (76-73) and Travis Russell (74-75) are 66th at 149, and Bryan Shin is 88th at 158 (82-76).

Three players are tied for first at 6-under 134:  Stanford's Patrick Rodgers and Cameron Wilson, and Washington's Trevor Simsby.

UCI is in ninth place with a 36-hole score of 724 in the tournament that has a 6-player, 5-count format. 

Fourth-ranked Stanford leads at 696, Washington is second (702) and No. 3 California is third (704) in the 14-team tourney that features 10 teams in the top 50 of the Golfstat rankings.

The final round is scheduled for Sunday.
