MANOA, Hawai'i --- UCI shook off a halftime deficit for the 9-5 win over Hawai'I to open Big West play Friday night at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine (13-7, 1-1) opened the scoring thanks to Emily Carr. She added a second in the second period to give UH the 2-1 lead at the half.
UC Irvine (17-6, 1-0) got in gear in the third period with four goals including a pair from Jessy Cardey. The 'Eaters continued its hot half with four more goals in the fourth quarter opening up the lead for the 9-5 victory.
Cardey and Danielle Warde finished with three goals each. Jillian Yocum stood tall for 11 saves including six in the second quarter alone and a critical save on a penalty shot to keep UCI in the match early on. She also added a steal and assist.
Hillary Estrada led the way with three assists and contributed a goal and steal. McKenna Mitchell earned three exclusions and scored a pair of field blocks that kept the Rainbow Wahine within range.
The 'Eaters are now 1-0 in Big West play and return to the mainland for a 12:00 p.m. match at Anteater Aquatic Complex on Sat. Apr. 5.
