RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- UC Irvine sophomore Melanie Speech is in ninth place after the first day of the heptathlon at the UC Riverside Spring Classic Invitational.

She has 2,663 points after the first four events that were conducted Thursday.

Speech had times of 16.11 in the 100-meter hurdles and 25.80 in the 200 meters, and marks of 39-1 ¾ in the shot put and 4-6 ¼ in the high jump.

Shaye Springall of Southern Utah is the leader with 3,345 points in the field of 14 competitors.

The heptathlon concludes Friday with the long jump, javelin throw and the 800 meters.
